It was founded by a group of employees of the General Electric located in the town Palmer (Mameyes) of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico; under the name of Caribe and Switchgear General Electric Employee Federal Credit Union. On December 12, 1956, the certification letter was requested, which was granted to us on January 1, 1957. From January 1, 1957 to the present, a service sheet for our associates of 53 consecutive years is established by our Cooperative. On January 17, 2001, the Cooperative adopted its new name; UNIVERSAL COOP FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, on January 10, 2003, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) granted permission to expand our services to "UNDER SERVE AREAS". This program allows members who reside, work, attend a school, college, religious institution, business or other activity in the aforementioned areas, as well as their family members, to enter as partners. Our offices are located in Rio Grande and Añasco.
